My Students
Students need more than the 3-R's (reading, 'riting & 'rithmetic). We now know that social/emotional skills are also important. Sometimes, as children are learning and mastering new self-regulation skills, they need access to tools that help them get back to a place where they are calm & ready to learn.
We would like to offer students tools that they can use at school as well as at home that will help them deescalate when anxiety or other emotions become overwhelming.
My Project
We would like to offer tools for students to use at school (therapeutic putty, fidgets, kinetic sand, origami paper, etc.) and at home. If we are able to provide the tools in addition to teaching the skills for them to self-regulate they will become better skilled in the process.
Offering calming tools to our students will allow them to appear to an outside observer like any other child simply playing with a toy.
They won't stand out. They won't draw any additional unwanted attention to themselves. They will just appear to be a child playing with a toy in an expected way while they are attempting to regulate their emotions.
