Calming Spaces

My Students

I teach students with a variety of sensory and academic needs in an urban elementary school. My students come to my classroom for support in academics, sensory and behavioral concerns. They often work independently, in small groups or individually with an adult to accomplish their academic task.

My students are energetic, curious and knowledge seeking.

Our school is a large public school where 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the economic needs of our families. As a school we have a 74% passing rate for state appointed standardized tests. My students have needs beyond basic academics. They seek support regulating sensory input, organization, emotional stability and social skills. My students work to make steps to success every day.

My Project

Some students struggle throughout the school day to stay focused on academics. This lack of focus may be due to attention concerns, behaviors related to autism spectrum disorder, past trauma and lack of emotional regulation. Through social skills teaching, adult support, peer relationship building and sensory tools my children can learn to help themselves focus on their academics in the school environment.

Weighted blankets, fidgets and visual timers, can assist my students with emotional regulation and focus in the school environment.

The weighted blankets allow students the sense of deep pressure for calming. Visual timers allow students with the need for structure to be aware of time frames for activities. Visually watching liquid motion timers can create a calming effect to help a students refocus. Fidgets allow students to move their hands while focusing their mind on instruction. All of these tools can be utilized in the classroom, in a calming area or in the Student Support Center.
