My students need wobble chairs and a calm down cube to help keep focused. Dramatic play items to play together and develop social skills. And community vehicles and animals to increase engagement in science & SS.
My 1st graders live in NYC and come from a variety of backgrounds. Our classroom is a place where students are equals and respected. Our school provides many opportunities for students.
Many parents at our school are active and involved.
They are looking for ways to work with their child at home and have a nice partnership with teachers. I use Class DoJo to connect parents to our classroom. I share pictures, videos, and notes with parents on a daily basis.
While some students have technology access at home for others there are less opportunities.
My Project
My students LOVE play workshop but our classroom is lacking in items that spark creativity and group play. With these dramatic play centers students will work together and continue to develop social skills.
First graders often need a place to go to calm down away from the 20+ other students they are always with.
The calm down cube is exactly what our class needs! Our school is teaching mindfulness and the calm down cube is the perfect place for students to go and take a mindful break away from others.
We have some really fun science and social studies units on Communities and Animals but we don't have the tools to make it fun. Adding community vehicles will let students play in a community and even build one out of blocks! The animals will be perfect for studying and sorting into animal groups. These items will really increase student engagement!
