This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Baltimore City middle school classes are such an exciting group of special needs students with mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, problem solve and calculate, while some of their classmates are focused on attaining life skills. Our group loves to use computers, perform experiments, play outside, learn new games, and dance to a sweet tune.

In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.

We are part of a larger school that celebrates inclusion. I teach an 8th grade inclusion math class; 6-8 self-contained science class; and a 6-8 ELA class. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. My classroom is about building skills to get included. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day.

My Project

During a distance-learning science field notes exercise the children were asked to draw illustrations of the organisms they observed. Many of my students did not have colored pencils, erasers, or other art supplies to complete the assignment. I would like to send them home with a packet of pencils, markers, sharpeners, watercolors and other supplies. The students will also use the art materials for therapeutic SEL activities. I am also asking for biology, ecosystems, anatomy, and physical science activity/coloring books. I know the children will be so excited to receive their own art packets to create their masterpieces during both distance and hybrid learning classes!
