Calming Room/Bag Supplies

Help me give my students a place to sit/rock in a safe place: our calming room, the Zen Den.

My Students

Our students are amazing! Our student body is made up of 7th and 8th graders, who are resilient, community contributors and hard workers. We have over 30% receiving free or reduced-price lunch. As a school counselor, I have the opportunity to work with all of our students, individually, in small groups, and in the classroom setting.

COVID-19 has been hard on all of our students, families and staff.

We were remote for about 1/2 of the 2021-22 school year, and like most everyone making connections was difficult, but our staff pulled together, worked harder than ever, and connected with our students.

My Project

Two years ago, we began to teach and practice mindfulness at our school. We provided each of our students with a calming bag to be used at home during remote learning. It included practice mindfulness cards, a fidget spinner, a zipper bracelet, and some silly putty. We also gave each teacher their own calming bag and a calming box for their classroom.

This year, with students back in person, we now have a calming room that we call the Zen Den.

Students are able to come to this safe place to regulate their emotions and also learn new calming/mindfulness practices to be used at school, at home and in the community.

This project will allow us to receive a sturdy and comfortable rocking chair to be used in the Zen Den. Currently, we have a yard sale find that is on its last rocker. This project will also allow us to receive an item for all students for the calming bags for the fall as well as calming tools for the Zen Den.
