My Project
I am requesting items needed for a calming space within my classroom. In this calming space students will need a chair to sit in while they calm down and/or to clear their mind, lighting to help them to relax and to see while reading, a fan because there isn’t in any AC in the space I would be using, books on handling emotions and stress, and essential oils and a warmer to also help them to calm down and relax. I am also requesting a room divider and small tables for this space.
At our school we have a lot of students with disabilities which includes anger management issues.
I feel having a safe space for them to go to instead of the office will be beneficial to them. The calming space should be a safe place where a student can go to calm him or herself using pre-taught strategies for a short amount of time.
The goal is to give the student a “time away” so that his behavior does not escalate any further. The calming space is a positive place that rewards students for keeping their emotions in check and using strategies to calm themselves so that learning can occur. If students are able to calm themselves and handle their emotions, there will be less school suspensions with will lead to less failures in our schools.
