Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are brand new kindergarten students who are learning the alphabet, to 8th grade students learning pre-algebra. I am the guidance counselor at a new K-8 school in Orange County, Florida. Our goal is to provide a quality education through shared responsibility in a safe and supportive environment for all students to meet the challenges of a global society.
Here at the W School we are “Committed to Excellence,” and we work hard to make sure that all our students needs are being met from academic to their social and emotional needs.
Our goal and responsibility is to help each student develop an enthusiasm for learning, a respect for self and others, and the skills to become a creative independent thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
These materials will help me reach the lives of my students at the earliest of ages to make sure that they are learning the key tools to becoming productive members of our society and learn calming techniques through mindfulness. Bibliotherapy is a great way to bring every day topics to my students. I would use this in my school counseling curriculum weekly. I teach elementary and middle school students every Thursday. I also run small group counseling sessions weekly. Daily, I work individually with students. These books would make my guidance curriculum more well rounded. We are going to have calming toys, use aromatherapy, grow lavender plants, and play calm music! With bibliotherapy, I am going to create a calm space. It will be called the ZEN DEN. The books will be used to read and learn about emotions. The AeroGarden will be used to grow lavendrr. Plants are a great way to calm the soul.
