This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 2nd grade at a low-income public elementary school with over 1,000 students.
My students face immense challenges outside of school that they can't control.
We are battling poverty, homelessness, foster care, and abuse in the homes. So what they can control is their learning and how they will succeed through hard work and determination. Even though they have challenges outside my classroom, they always bring their enthusiasm to learn and their drive to better themselves every day to class. I know my students will be successful because I truly believe in all of them.
My Project
I try my best to not have my students sitting for over 15 minutes at a time. They're 6 and 7 and need to move! This year, I have some super wiggly children and we've tried a variety of things to help them focus. We do stretches before sitting down and dance moves between lessons. We put rubber bands around the legs of the chairs to bounce their legs to help them focus. One of my students said that in his 1st grade classroom, they had Hokki stools and they were awesome! I checked them out and saw students wobbling on them and COMPLETELY engaged in what they were learning. I just knew that my student who suggested the Hokki stools might just be the one who makes a tremendous difference in my classroom. I shouted, "Thank you for the idea! I'm going to write a Donorschoose.org project about it now."
