My students need a sensory room that includes three Sleeping Cloud Inflatable Loungers, a InnooCare Essential Oil Diffuser, Aromatherapy Essential Oils and a strobe light with multiple effects.
I work with a wonderful and diverse group of students that range from 6th through 12th grade. No two children are the same with multiple and severe handicaps. These students have a few more hoops to jump through than others. My students learn while learning to overcoming their multiple disabilities.
We are learning focused and strive to tackle new challenges daily!
My job as a educator, is to find the best ways to reach and teach my students. Using all available options I set up individualized learning for each student to reach their maximum potential. In a self contained classroom for severe and profound students I am able to effectively create and track goals for all students.
Our student body is quite divers: 50% Caucasian, 42% American Indian, 4% Hispanic, 2% African American and 2% Asian. Out of these students, approximately 15% of those are in special education. We provide free or reduced-price lunches to 47% of our students as well. Our overall state score is a B+ as we hold high expectations for all of our students.
My Project
We face so many needs in life and in our classroom. We have made great strides to meet our students needs mentally. We work daily on tasks to sharpen their skills and reach our goals.
In order to focus on their daily lessons, my students also need tools to assist with their sensory needs.
The majority of my students have sensory needs that can be met by a wide arrange of options. The inflatable lounges will provide a comforting cool down area and a comfortable spot to relax. For my students with Autism, these lounge chairs will also provide a comforting hug when they need a small squeeze to relax or cool down. The loungers are ideal for our classroom as they will be able to be rolled up, put away and quickly accessed when the need arises.
We want to provide our students with a more relaxing environment for when they feel overwhelmed. Our students struggle to understand new topics, feelings and interactions with others. This lead them to feel overwhelmed and require short brain breaks. Using an essential oil diffuser and a variety of essential oils will help aid in their relaxation and help their brains to stay alert. We are also requesting a disco light projector. This light will fulfill some visual sensory needs for our students. It will project colors, shapes and light movement into our classroom.
