The student support team at my school is noticing more and more students need sensory, breathing, and stress tools to allow them to access the instruction that is occurring in the classroom.
Our goal is to create Calming Kits that are uniform in every classroom of the building for the students to use when their feelings and emotions begin to grow.
This will allow for students to begin to self-regulate their feelings during instruction instead of having their feelings get too large for the students to manage on their own. This will result in students not leaving the classroom to take a longer break, thus being present for maximum instruction. The staff at my school will be trained in how to assist the students to utilize these tools so they are in fact tools and not toys. There will be common language used among staff and cue cards in the Calming Kits to assist with instruction of self-regulation.
We strive to have a school-wide approach with assisting students with this lifelong skill.
