This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
With a shift in culture in how we express emotions, I want to give my students the opportunity to create their own calming jars. Within my classroom, I have created a space where students can decompress and relax. They are invited into that space if they are feeling overwhelmed or if they need a break from the constant stimulation that is present in their life. It is a space for them to have ownership of so what I am planning to do is for them to have calming jars which they will create for themselves and access when need be. These jars will be placed in the "quiet space" of my classroom giving them an opportunity to use a resource which they have created. That is why the variety of beads and trinkets are included. They are also there along with the jewelry tools because I have planned a craft day with students so they can practice their fine motor skills while creating wearable jewelry to gift for family members. When students create art that is not stagnant but purposeful it allows them to realize that what they create can be impactful and hold value. Many times their work is temporary but allowing them to create something useful will hopefully show them how their work can be impactful and permanent.
