My Students
My students are young men and young ladies who live in the "most dangerous" city in the US as well as being labeled one of the "highest poverty rates." They struggle daily in many ways to make it to school, but once they arrive they are ready to go. We have breakfast together and then we are off on our learning adventure for the day. My students come to school to learn. They have plans for college, and to reach those goals we push every day to overcome the struggles they face.
My Project
Calming Corners! project is to help support our students who struggle at times with sitting still, anger issues, or just emotions. This project will allow me to create a calming corner kit for each classroom to have as a resource to use with the students of our building. Our goal is to teach and allow our students to take a deep breath and control their emotions and actions before they get into trouble. The student will be able to go to a special area in each room for 5 minutes and use the fidget toys, silly putty, or play dough to relax and get their emotions into control. The stress balls will be a wonderful resource for the students to just sit and focus on the ball. All the different fidget toys will be just allow the students to focus themselves and control their emotions.
Teaching and allowing our students to learn how to deal with their emotions through the use of a safe space with activities our students will become successful learners with their education and life skills.
No greater gift could be for many of our students and that is what our school is wanting for our students, to feel successful in all things they do and learning to control their emotions and actions is just one small part of our day.
