My Students
I teach 50 energetic and curious 7 year-olds. We live in a small, rural town in southwestern Utah surrounded by geologic wonders and fragile desert habitats. Opportunities for jobs are limited here, but the natural resources are endless.
These kids grow up outdoors, camping, fishing, and exploring their desert backyard.
They are inspired by this fascinating landscape and love to learn about their world and their environment. Science is their favorite subject by far. My students love their small town and their immense backyard.
My Project
I want to have a Calming Corner in my classroom for students who are having strong emotions and need to self regulate. Our school has a Wellness Room, but there are times when it is closed and my students need a space for when the tears start flowing.
The pandemic has been hard on all of us, especially these kids.
They are still coping with sick classmates, family members, and missed social events. A Calming Corner is a place they can sit on a bean bag chair, choose a relaxation tool like a water bubbler or a stuffed animal, and calm themselves down. They will use a 15 minute timer and then they will be calm and ready to get back to learning.
