My 2nd graders' science and social studies curriculum is taught entirely in Spanish. They are participating in Utah's dual immersion program, where they spend half of their day learning in a foreign language. I want to reinforce the science and social studies curriculum with high quality books and activities in English. As their language arts teacher, I want to fill my library with non-fiction books on life cycles, habitats, adaptations, weather, rocks, and space in English. I want to have a weather station, butterfly habitat, and solar system model to bring science to life. I want to provide active cross-curricular centers in science and geography to connect what they are learning in English. With these support materials they will be more confident in science and social studies in their native language. These children need a strong foundation in science to become leaders in S.T.E.M careers.
