Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being at our school for several years, I have gotten the chance to really get to know many of the students in the school, including those I have never taught. Many of them have gone through seriously adverse situations and misfortunes that impact their everyday life, especially their education. I am amazed at how resilient they can be, and how they push through to the best of their abilities regardless of hardships that affect them. Being a fifth-grade teacher has shown me how fast some students have to mature. I have taught their younger siblings in previous years (coming up from kindergarten and first grade) and see how they take care of their family. Each child that I have gotten to know at this school has my heart.
I want nothing but the best for all of these students, and that includes giving them hands-on experiences that will be memorable to them.
My students need to be able to feel like school isn't another one of their draining duties or work. I want all of them to enjoy school and look forward to each day in my class, whether in person or virtually. They truly deserve the best!
My Project
Since the pandemic schools have really been focusing on Social-Emotional Learning. This is something that has always been a priority in my class, but I have been more intentional with the way I manage it in my classroom. My school has created a Zen Den for teachers and staff, and have encouraged us to have a calming corner for our classrooms. Unfortunately, on the day special guests were in the school to help us create one, I did not have any coverage for my planning hour. I've realized that I can create my own filled with books and calming objects.
My students should have a safe space to go that will help them settle ill feelings and frustrations that some of them experience on a daily basis.
Calming music, squishy toys, and books about feelings and kindness are going to be excellent tools that a student can use while sorting out their feelings. My plan is to have a basket or bin to hold these items that can be easily transported to a comfortable spot in my classroom, like the library area for sitting, or the counter on the side if standing is preferred. I'm very excited to start implementing this calming corner in my class!
