Calming Corner

Help me give my students a cozy canopy corner, safe seats and a weighted blanket so they have a comfortable place to calm down, practice mindfulness and utilize other emotional regulation strategies.

My Students

Our students in the community come from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences. Almost 40% of students at our school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch, while 20% of students also have learning disabilities.

Many of the students I work with have difficulty learning, staying focused, or struggle in these areas because of unique social/emotional needs.

It is important to provide them a safe, comfortable and nurturing learning environment for them to make progress in school and reach their full potential.

I love working with my students every day. We teach each other the importance of patience, kindness and perseverance and how these impact our relationships and our learning on a daily basis.

My Project

My students are very kind, loving and hard-working. They are enthusiastic about learning and are eager to share their knowledge with others. However, many of my students face a variety of barriers on a daily basis that keep them from fully participating in their classrooms for an entire school day.

Some of these barriers include poor social skills, emotional regulation skills, processing and learning delays.

Students may also have negative experiences outside of school that affect their emotions and behaviors during school. These difficulties and experiences can cause students to respond emotionally in a variety of negative ways.

A calming corner would provide my students with a comfortable area in our classroom when they need a safe place to calm down or take a break. All of my students' experiences and needs are different. Some students practice mindfulness while others need guidance to identify their feelings and solve a problem. The weighted blanket will be used with students that need sensory tools to help them calm down.
