I teach 4K in a middle to low income school. I have 18 students in the morning and an additional 18 afternoon students. For the most part families are very involved with their children. I do have students who have special needs as well as a few students who have experienced trauma in their young lives. They have a very hard time regulating their emotions. In my experience relationship is the key to making learning successful. If students feel safe and cared for their potential for learning increases dramatically.
It is my job to give my preschoolers a consistent safe environment as well as tools to help them self-regulate their emotions.
My Project
These calming dividers, seats and pillows will give my students a place to calm themselves down and self regulate their emotions preparing them to rejoin the learning environment. Providing a safe caring and nurturing environment is critical for optimal learning in 4K.
Emotions can be very strong for young traumatized or special needs students.
When a student is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated he or she will be given options to help themselves calm down. When taught strategies to self-regulate vebally or physically going to a calm place young children can self calm themselves allowing themselves to rejoin in the learning environment.
