Calming Corner Tools to Support First Grade Emotion Management
Help me give my students a comfortable round rug, relaxing floor chair to sit on, a few fidget toy options, and a LED star light canopy to add to our first grade calming corner.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As students enter the first grade, they are actively learning about new emotions and how to problem solve every day. They are working hard to figure out the best ways to manage their strong feelings and for that reason, calming corners and a variety of fidget options are beneficial and essential in a first grade classroom. The comfortable floor chair, round carpet, and star light canopy will offer students a quiet, relaxing, and safe space to take a break. The various fidget toy options will allow students to try different cool down methods until they can identify the one that works best for their preferences and needs.
With your donations, I will teach my first grade students how to choose a calming technique and use the quiet corner to help themselves regulate their feelings or when they need support resolving a conflict with a classmate in a positive way.
This year I have realized how quickly my current first grade class has been able to use our small classroom calming space independently and respectfully. Students have impressed me with the amount of care that they give our current calming corner and have confirmed that next year's students are deserving of more fun options. Unfortunately I have found that students aren't as engaged or haven't benefitted from the small amount fidgets that are currently offered in our fidget basket and additional items and comfortable seating options would be valuable.
