This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Preschool age is a part of a child's life where they are learning about the world around them and understanding how everything makes them feel. Social Emotional Learning is a huge focus in preschool classrooms as we are teaching them about how to express what they feel and how they can cope with those feelings. We validate those emotions and model how they can express that through songs, play, and simple daily conversations.
A calming corner is a safe place where students can take a break, release feelings of anger or frustrations away from the friends until they are ready to re-enter our daily activities.
The calming corner that my students will benefit from is one with a cozy chair where they are not just limited to sitting but also laying their head, one with puzzles, manipulatives, and solution strategies that will show them alternatives to regulate emotions and understand them. They will have books that they can relate to, breathing tools, writing/drawing utensils, and a chart where they can show us what it is that they feel if they have a hard time verbally expressing it.
