Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are in a very high needs community with most families qualifying for free and reduced price lunch. In the heart of Tucson, our school has a high number of students who speak Spanish as their first language and are learning English and students who are bilingual and strengthening their command of English. We also have many students who come from homes that are in need. Many students wear second-hand clothing and come to school without snacks. They often come to school as a safe place and a place of peace and calm.
Because of my students' varied backgrounds and the stresses they bring to school with them, I want to create a calm and engaging classroom environment where they will be at ease and learning can be their main concern.
The focus of this project, then, is to gather supplies that will make our classroom cheerful yet calming and a place where my students can get their energy and emotions out productively.
My Project
For many classrooms like mine, harsh fluorescent lighting and hard furniture are the norm. Throughout the year, students complain about their eyes hurting, headaches from the lighting and, despite my best efforts to get them out of their chairs, the tiredness that comes from sitting on something hard while you work. I would love to have light filters for my classroom to ease the eye strain and some seating options that keep kids comfortable while they work. My kids already come to school with so much to distract them, and their environment shouldn’t add to that!
Additionally, since many of my students have extra energy that keeps them from focusing, fidgets and chair bands would help immensely in making the classroom a more inclusive and comfortable place for them to learn.
