I am excited to be stepping into the role of the counselor! These students have not had a consistent counselor at their school for more than six months. I am looking forward to becoming a safe and welcoming environment.
My hope is to help students feel less stressed, anxious, sad, frustrated, and worried, and start focusing on learning and growing.
To help these students feel welcome and safe in my classroom when they enter through my door I want to decorate a classroom that is warm and inviting.
The items that I am requesting will help my development as an elementary school counselor as well as increase the programming I can do with the students individually, in small groups, and in classrooms. My goal for this project is to have a comfortable office where students can come to manage emotions and learn and apply interpersonal skills. I hope to increase student self-regulation strategies which, in turn, decreases the number of behavior incidences. They will do this through the use of books, art supplies, and group games. The books will be used to teach about emotions and coping skills, as well as help me develop a counseling program for the school. The rug, and posters will be used to create a calming atmosphere.
The effect of the pandemic has impacted the student's emotional regulation and coping skills. Being a school counselor has always been a challenging job; however, being a school counselor after a global pandemic has caused even more daily challenges. As the school counselor in my school, students and teachers come to me, to look for social emotional support, mental health support, academic support, and peer relationship support. It is important that my office be supplied with items that make students feel comfortable to share what is bothering them.
