This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom is a second home - and we want it to feel like it. We spend most of our day there amidst all of the stressors that have been normalized in the daily grind - barred windows, fluourescent lights, dysfunctional heating, home and school worries. My students have asked for a classroom with warm lights and comforting smells. They know they are cared for when our classroom is well-cared for. I want to bring in high quality natural materials to calm their minds to make way for the bigger questions we discuss everyday about history and politics in our social studies courses.
My students love to apply what they have learned in creative projects - sewing their own interpretations of the American flag, researching indigenous relationships with plants, pop-up books on United States census data on race.
We do much of our work in teams. Having a soft area with a couch will provide students with more options for flexibility between the needs of small groups and individuals.
