Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle school students are struggling. The stress of the pandemic along with the normal stressors have taken a toll and I am seeing students experiencing more panic attacks, more meltdowns in the classroom and more conflicts with other students than ever before. My goal as a school counselor is to provide a supportive space where students can take a break, express how they are feeling and learn to regulate their emotions.

This project will help me create a safe and relaxing corner of the counseling office where students can retreat when they need a break or an outlet for their emotions so they can return to a state where they can learn.

In this space, they will be able to identify how they are feeling, practice mindfulness, experiment with different kinds of self-regulation activities (from art materials to fidget toys to sensory materials to games and play activities) in order to discover what helps them feel calm and ready to learn.

The bean bag chairs, rug, electric Jellyfish Tank Table Lamp and posters will help create the relaxing setting that students need when experiencing stress at school.
