Help me give my students a calming area using iPad technology, visuals, and seating where they can center themselves and have a safe space when they are feeling emotions that require personal space and guidance.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students in my classroom are motivated and enthusiastic learners. They did not get to complete a full year of preschool and they completed kindergarten on zoom because of the Covid pandemic, but they continue to demonstrate that they are resilient. Having lost in person instruction has created a gap in how they sometimes respond to peers when there is a conflict and require mediation. They also have demonstrated more anxiety when dealing with academic challenges and attending school full time away from their parents.
Setting up a calming area in the classroom where students can retreat to either decompress or to wait for the teacher to meet for counsel will be beneficial and will keep from distracting the entire class.
Students have been engaged in social emotional learning lessons daily, and they have constantly demonstrated compassion, understanding, and empathy when listening to their peers share in community circles. I am confident that they too will be able to sit in the calming area in pairs to help each other. The iPad will be used to run apps like Headspace, Mood Meter, Super Better, and Calm.
This space will continue to make the classroom a place where students can feel comfort and peace.
