Help me give my students a calming area in our classroom to help them self-regulate emotions and be full of joy in hearts and wellness in spirit and mind.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 4-5 year old TK students love to come to school to make friends and learn through play. They enjoy working with each other however small conflicts arise and they lack skills to express what they are feeling and how to handle and manage their emotions and solve the issue. They also do not understand the different emotions that develop in them throughout the day and how to understand them and self-regulate themselves to be full of joy and wellness
I want them to develop social-emotional strategies to understand how to control and manage their emotions and know how to develop skills to positively relate with peers and adults and fulfill LAUSD's Pillar 2: Joy and Wellness.
Creating a Calming Area in my class will help support all students grow and develop their Emotional Intelligence. The Social Emotional Learning materials will offer purposeful lessons and engaging activities to help support them on this learning process. The Retell Books will help children recognize their feelings through other characters, the Breathing Boards will help with self-control skills, and Cuddle Ball will help them calm their bodies and be able to transition from extreme feelings. Teaching children to understand, label and accept their feelings is an essential part of the Transitional Kindergarten curriculum and by having an inviting and visually pleasing Calming Area in their own classroom will help promote healthy ideas in a positive and caring way that will create a joyful and wellness atmosphere.
