My Project
Hello! I will be using these awesome materials to expand the existing calming area that I have created (soft rug with books in a corner of the therapy office). These beanbags and soft pillows will make it so much more calming and soothing for students to take time to regulate their big feelings (sadness, anger, anxious) by taking a seat in these soft cushion seats and using fidgets or reading a book as their bodies begin to calm down.
As the school therapist, it is vital to have students be in a regulated state before they begin to express and process their big emotions in the therapy sessions.
Therefore, by having students utilize the calming area, I will be able to help students further process their emotions or possible traumas more effectively due to their increased regulated states stemming from their time spent in the calming area.
Our school is a campus filled with loving and bright students who really enjoy accessing the therapy office for therapeutic interventions (talking to therapist for help, social skills groups, art therapy activities, etc.). By having this calming area, students who may need extra time to regulate or students that need a space to relax, may freely use these new items and can also encourage other students to access the calming area when they are in need of a calming space.
