My students need a comfortable space in my office where they can come to take a break and utilize mindfulness techniques in order to regulate themselves enough to be productive in their classes.
As a counselor in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are often faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, these students are capable of great things, and they deserve a place where they can take a break to gather their thoughts, practice mindfulness techniques, and relax before returning to their rigorous curriculum.
These students are clever, outgoing, and want desperately to succeed.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may hold them back from certain opportunities, and sometimes causes them to act out in school in order to gain negative attention.
While I am working with the students, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day, so I try to make it as positive as possible.
My Project
As a middle school counselor, I want to offer a place where students can take a break when they are beginning to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or anxious.
The rug and bean bag chairs will help to make this space a cozy space where students can calm their bodies, and utilize some mindfulness techniques to calm their mind, so that they can regroup and return to class in a more productive manner.
I will work with students to help them identify these feelings before they boil over, so they can be proactive instead of reactive, and thus avoiding getting into trouble and/or disrupting the classroom.
