Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Curious, energetic, imaginative are a few words to describe my 15 students. At 3 years-old, they are beginning their first year in school. They are developing their independence, making friends and exploring their interests. My teaching team and I strive to create a warm, safe and inviting environment for all. My students feel confident in their ability to take risks, which is essential in strengthening their learning and growth.
My Project
“My Calm Place” is a designated area in our classroom for students to engage in relaxation practices. For most of my students, this is their first time away from their caregivers and this can lead to a mix of emotions. As their teacher, I assist students to name their feelings and find ways to express feelings as part of our classroom community. By using the Emotiblocks, my students will develop their ability to recognize feelings and provides a tangible format to express their own feelings.
It is very important that they have an outlet when those strong feelings come over them.
With your assistance, “My Calm Place” will have a variety of materials to address the individual needs of my students. Some will find comfort holding a soft baby doll or listening to the soothing sounds of the rainmaker. While other students may need to squeeze and push the sand as a release for those strong emotions. “My Calm Place” demonstrates to my very young students that their feelings are respected as they learn ways to self-regulate.
