My students need art supplies and decor for their craft corner in their sensory room. Items like markers, crayons, colored pencils, stencils, paper, lights, scissors and other art supplies.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low income area and resources for them are hard to come by. These students all have special needs and often get sensory overload in a classroom full of activity. Because of this, they need a place to go to relax and calm themselves so they can rejoin the classroom.
Each student has a different way of calming their bodies and minds so the sensory room has to be full of activities for all their diverse needs.
For example, this project is to create an art corner in the sensory room. This room would serve students on the Autism Spectrum, students with emotional disturbance, Down's Syndrome, multiple disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.
My Project
Our goal is to continue to put some finishing touches on our calming sensory room for our high school students with special needs. The next step is to create an arts & crafts studio corner in the room. We all know how calming art can be when we are stressed. We want to make this room a place students want to come when school is too overwhelming. Our hope is that many students will benefit from this room for many years to come.
All students with special needs will get to use these supplies in our Sensory room to help them cope with school stressors and regulate their emotions.
The room has dim lights, comfy seating options, peaceful music and lots of sensory items to help them to return to our class and be successful. The art corner will give yet another option for the students to help those students who use art to help cope.
These items will all help create a corner in our calm environment for the students to color and create. For example, the requested lights, art and crafts supplies like scissors, scented markers, and crayons will all add to the sensory environment to reach students with all different sensory needs. The more items to smell, touch, rest on and play with the better the room will work.
