Help me give my students with disabilities a calm environment to learn and grow with part of the Lakeshore Calming Colors collection and other functional storage to help promote independence and organizational skills.
I am a special education teacher servicing students in kindergarten and 1st grade. I inherited a classroom this year that contains a lot of materials for much older students and adults. I have outlined below how I would use the materials on my wish list. The space I have is not very big for the use it is intended for, so I picked items that are both effective in saving space and making the room functional for its population.
My goal is to give my students the best learning experience possible through creating a learning environment where they feel safe, comfortable, and calm.
I plan to use the space saving tree book shelf to display our seasonal read alouds and current units of study. I plan to use the corner storage center to house our sensory toys in our calm down corner. The 2 bean bags and knot pillow ball will also go there.
The calm down corner is a place where students can go when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, etc. It is utilized daily and I want it to be a special place for the students. The rug will cover a large portion of our learning area and students will be able to work on the rug on the floor. Its calming colors will bring a sense of peace to the learning space.
The 8 cubby storage unit and clear view bins will make daily learning materials easily accessible for students and help promote independence and organizational skills.
Lastly, the globe string lights will be hung from the ceiling as a replacement for the overhead fluorescent lighting when we are having quiet times in the classroom.
