Calm, Sensory-Rich, Alternate Learning Environment Support
Help me give my students an alternative learning environment with flexible seating options and a sensory-rich experience in our classroom! From beanbag seats, to cozy floor seating, and dim lighting, my classroom can transform to comfy in no time!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a new general education teacher, now teaching in an ICT classroom, I want to help bring a dynamic, comfortable, and sensory-rich experience to our classroom environment by creating a flexible seating option classroom. Throughout my time as an educator, what I have found, is that scholars truly prefer the option to move about their classroom, sit on the floor to collaborate with peers, and have a calming station to utilize to rest and restore.
In an ICT classroom, my co-teacher and I have a mix of general education and special education students with various learning styles, emotional needs, and preferred ways of needing space and time.
It is important for us to provide our students with an out-of-the-box classroom setup where they can access their learning environment in multiple ways: using calming tools when they need a break, transitioning to alternate seating arrangements when needed, or simply bringing themselves to the present moment with specific tools they will learn through daily instruction centered around mindfulness and social-emotional learning.
My goal for my students this year is to gain self-awareness, as well as valuable tools to empower themselves with emotional regulation strategies, and just simply feel comfortable in their bodies so they can focus better, so more connection to the content can ensue. We want to maximize their learning this year and feeling the sensory and calming tools, comfortable seating, help to establish a solid foundation for the magic of learning to unfold.
