Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in inner-city Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income families. Often, their parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and are not always able to provide even basic school supplies for their children. Many students also do not have regular access to books and literacy, or even regular homework support, and therefore rely heavily on the teachers and other school staff to support their academic needs. Despite this, however, they are an eager bunch of students who come to school ready to learn new things every day. They are inquisitive about how things work and why things happen, and even though I don't always have the answers, they trust me to guide and teach them the best I can.

My Project

Our classroom needs some sensory-specific tools, such as thinking putty, mesh-and-marble fidget toys, scented markers, rain sticks, and other items, to help students refocus their attention when they have strong feelings and anxieties. Often, when students are given a chance to take a mental break, they are able to be more productive, and therefore less disruptive to themselves and others in the classroom.

Many of my students come from families who are continually experiencing trauma in their daily lives, and have trouble managing their thoughts and emotions, which can sometimes make classroom learning difficult.

The resources purchased in this project will be used in a "calm-down" corner of the classroom where students can visit when they are feeling especially nervous, anxious, excited, or angry, and are unable to continue with their work or participate in group activities.

Additionally, the books about mindfulness meditation will help children understand the importance of deep breathing is in connecting our bodies with our minds, which is key to being the best learners possible.
