Help me give my students a calm and peaceful classroom. We have a few students with sensory problems and they need a place to feel less anxious. Ballchairs are a wonderful way for students to feel less jittery.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am one of three teachers who run a transition program for 18-22 year-old students with disabilities. Once the student graduates from high school, they defer their diploma so they can attend the program. A PPT team decides if the student is appropriate for the program. There are 37 students in the program, along with eight paraprofessionals. Some of the students have 2:1 paraprofessional support while others have general support.
Our job is to get our young adults ready for independent living in their community.
This means a variety of things and it is different with each student. But for the most part, our students suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. But they are determined and resilient and I love that about them.
We strive to get them as many opportunities to get out into the community and expand their world, but if we can't do that, we have to create lessons that bring them out into the real world.
My Project
We have some students who need a quiet and calm place to go when they are anxious. Right now, we use a small section of the room that is blocked off from the rest of the room, but this can be isolating at times. We need the entire classroom to be less stressful for these students.
The use of fabric around the classroom will not only make the room look more peaceful but it will dampen the sound, which is something that sets students with sensory issues off.
Working in a school environment with little to no acoustical materials around can lead to exhaustion and aggravation, not only for the students, but the staff as well!
We also would like to try ballchairs as these can reduce the accumulated stress that students with ADD can build up over a day of trying to focus in class. Some kids need more movement than others. And for some kids with a sensory processing disorder or ADD or ADHD, being in motion allows their brains to be engaged.
