This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a high school psychiatric social worker. It is an incredibly difficult time to be a high school student. In addition to the usual academic and social pressures, our students are also trying to navigate coming of age during a global pandemic and social unrest. Students at my school have many additional barriers to academic and life success including poverty (100% of students I work with qualify for free or reduced lunch), language barriers (nearly 25% of my students are English learners), and unmet mental health needs (I have already serviced over 75 students this academic year alone).
I am creating a therapeutic space in my office where students can decompress and feel calm and safe during crisis intervention, individual counseling, and group counseling sessions.
My office will also be a place where students can take a moment to emotionally regulate in order to be able to return to class, ready to learn. The space will be also be used to hold multiple social-emotional learning and support groups. The futon will provide much-needed comfortable seating in the space. The white noise will provide much-needed privacy for confidential conversations. The fidgets will support anxiety relief and emotional regulation. The lap desks will allow students a portable surface to use for therapeutic writing and art projects. Noise-canceling ear plugs will allow students invaluable peace and quiet to practice mindfulness or to simply take a break from the overstimulation that is so common in our schools.
This new space will be a much needed sanctuary for my students amidst all the chaos. Thank you for contributing to this calm and healing space!
