The students I work work our in the alternative education for disrupted youth, they have lots of emotional needs that are met with counseling and group. But one of things that is not done is spaces in classroom where they can deescalate while remaining in the classroom as to know lose instruction.
With the spaces in the classroom, it gives the students a sense of calmness and comfort while still working with the teacher on their instruction.
Any loss of instruction is not good for the type of students I serve. We want the students to use the calm spaces to be able to regulate their emotions, calm down and continue on with their studies.
The use of the posters to remind them how to breathe, and the use of the fidgets with the beanbags help set the tone for a calm corner and sense of belonging within the classroom. My hope is that the students having a calm space within the classroom build the teacher student relationships and a way to learn how to regulate themselves without getting pulled out to the deans office, and losing even more instruction time.
