Our school is a positive, warm, safe, and inviting environment for students who have severe emotional disorders. All of our students have been through or faced some type of traumatic event during their young life. As a staff, we have been trained in therapeutic strategies in which we strive to meet each of our students individualized needs. We celebrate each and every success no matter how big or small. Even through the challenges my students have faced or are facing they come in every day smiling and ready to learn.
Due to my students social emotional needs, we need a calming corner to help support self-regulation while keeping my students in the classroom if they need a break from instruction time or a group activity.
I chose this project because my students struggle with experiencing strong emotions. By having a calm down corner this will allow them to self-regulate, process their feelings, and regain emotional control without feeling judged.
In the calm down kit my students will use the Solutions Wall to help them explore a range of emotions and choose from a selection of solutions, fostering self-reflection and problem-solving skills. They will be able to use the weighted animals (bear and Bumpa) for deep pressure stimulation. This soothes the nervous system and releases relaxing chemicals like serotonin. With these resources my students will also have access to different types of figits which can be used provide a tactile sensory experience that can help them focus on a repetitive action, this can be calming and grounding when they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Research has shown that the act of manipulating the small, textured figits can help distract from negative emotions and promote relaxation.
