Calm Down Corner: 6th Grade ELA Class

Children cannot learn when they are emotionally dysregulated.

This is true for all children, but this is especially true for neurodivergent (aka, disabled) children. Calm down corners aren't just for elementary school classrooms. All children need support in coping with big feelings. The items we are requesting will address children's visual, tactile, and auditory sensory needs to help them self-regulate. The library books will provide them with the coping strategies they need to identify their big feelings and manage those big feelings.

We want our students to understand that feelings are normal and natural. Feelings come and go. The important thing is what we chose to do with those feelings and how we choose to manage those feelings. In helping children to develop strong emotional intelligence, they will be able to self-regulate and focus on the academic lessons at hand.

The items that we are requesting will be used in an integrated 6th grade English Language Arts classroom in which some of the students are disabled and others are non-disabled. Some students are also English language learners. There are two teachers in this class- a general educator and a special educator. Related service providers, such as the speech therapist, the occupational therapist, and the guidance counselor, will be pushing into the class to support the students with their emotional, language, sensory, motoric, and academic needs.
