My Project

The students in my Title I elementary school come from countries all over the world. They speak over a dozen languages and many are learning English for the first time.

Our students develop at different rates and all require social-emotional learning supports to help them reach their developmental milestones.

Each student carries a unique history with them wherever they go. When they enter my gymnasium each week, they all work towards a set of unified learning standards in Physical Education. Their roads all lead to the same destination, but they each travel a unique and diverse pathway on that journey.

Learning to regulate and recognize emotions, make responsible choices, and work cooperatively with others are key components of the social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. In physical education, we believe that all learning is social and emotional. When emotional responses are heightened due to energized activity, competition, or physical challenge, it becomes increasingly difficult to self-regulate. The requested Calm Strips will give students a tactile tool to connect their breathing to their emotions to recognize and regulate responses positively. Likewise, the yoga posters will offer a menu of poses to target physical tension while regulating emotional changes. Individualized SEL task sheets and checklists can be created with the copy paper and stored in the Clearview clipboards for easy access wherever we move in the gymnasium.

All of these materials combined, will help my students calm down during PE class and before they leave the gymnasium to return to their homerooms.
