My students need a variety of sensory tools such as books focusing on social emotional health, puzzles, activity books to use in the Calm Corner to help them self-regulate, decompress, and work through their emotions.
I am a 5th grade teacher at R.E. Jewell School. Jewell is an amazing school located in a neighborhood that prides itself on community involvement. Students come to school eager to learn and parents take an active role in their child's education.
I strive to create a classroom environment that is welcoming, comfortable, and maximizes learning.
I incorporate small group instruction and have two separate small group stations for students to work with me, a volunteer, or their peers. My students are incredibly hard workers, contributing citizens, and love to come to school.
My Project
In our classroom, we teach children to be proactive and be in control of themselves. We teach children strategies to calm down and work through their anger, frustration, and sadness. When my students are in the right state of mind, they are able to focus, learn, and grow to their fullest potential.
With the use of strategies (breathing techniques and sentence prompts) and tools (books focusing on social emotional health, puzzles, activity books), my students will be able to self-regulate and take control of their emotions.
A special Calm Corner will provide children with the privacy and tools they need to calm down and return to the learning environment ready to learn.
