Calm Corner for Creative Minds

Help me give my students a space to be completely themselves in the classroom as they learn to respond to big emotions with new coping techniques.

My Project

Cultivating a calm environment in the classroom is essential for our students. School can be an overwhelming experience for kids between classroom changes, content, and navigating relationships. Furthermore, children undergoing adverse childhood experiences have an added layer of life to navigate while at school.

Here at our school, our students are creative, thoughtful, kind, intelligent, and a joy to work with.

Our team of counselors here at the school desire to implement this calm corner in each of the classrooms (grades 3-5) to support each student during a time they may need some peace. The breathing cards, fidget toys, comfortable seating, and headphones will nurture a space of mindfulness for students take a 2-minute break. Students can go to the calm corner, start a 2-minute timer and choose a toy, maze, or breathing exercise as they calm down.

We believe that each student is capable of kindness, respect, and responsibility. We understand that it may be difficult to learn when there are outside factors impacting our students. These materials will help us provide an opportunity for each child to step away and participate in safe coping skills during the school day to help them get as much learning from the school day as possible.
