The students in my classroom have severe disabilities that impact every area of their lives including communication and independent living. Some have primarily intellectual disabilities that cause difficulties in speaking and language. Others have disabilities that impact their physical abilities as well including struggles in walking, independently navigating a school setting and performing basic life skills. Despite these disabilities, my students are very much like their peers. They long to have friendships and to be independent. They love movies, music videos and food.
My Project
Students with special needs tire more quickly than their peers. After a set amount of time that includes calming activities, students are more alert and ready to learn. They have regular breaks built into their schedules, but need seating, fidgets and personalized spaces to take their breaks.
By donating to this project, you will be helping students learn how to self regulate in comfortable seating away from the glare of typical classroom lights.
Bean bags will give students a good place to calm down while they utilize fidgets, weighted blankets and listen to music. The alternative lighting will maintain a peaceful atmosphere. When students are upset or need a break, they will be able to be wrapped in the comfort of a bean bag chair while squeezing sensory shapes. Using alternative, dim lighting paired with music further helps calm students when they are upset or stressed. These materials will help them calm down more quickly and allow them to spend more time learning!
