Calm, Cool, and Collected in the School Counselor's Office
Help me give my students manipulatives, fidgets, and sensory items that will help them deescalate and develop coping strategies to tackle life's challenges.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a large public middle school where nearly 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price meals.
Every day I am amazed and overwhelmed at the obstacles our students face and overcome.
As a school counselor, my goal is to help every student develop the academic, social, and life skills needed to help them to be happy and successful, in school and in life. However, my middle school kids carry with them a host of stressors, worries, and life experiences that make focusing on "school" really difficult.
My Project
With everything that our students are facing, it is imperative to have a safe space where kids can calm down, process their emotions, and develop coping skills.
I need resources, manipulatives, calming activities, and storage bins to fully equip my office so that it meets my students needs.
By utilizing proven anxiety-busters such as a sand tray, stress balls, and manipulative fidget toys, students will be able to develop coping strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, anger, and sadness that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
With all of these tools, my students will be able to focus on the here and now: SCHOOL! I am excited to be able to impact my students' futures in a big way.
