My 6th grade students are 98 special, unique kids with hearts five times normal size. The kids are always showing kindness among one another and truly have established a learning community.
They light up my world with their humorous attitudes, playful comradery, and kind spirits.
Although math isn't always everyone's favorite subject, my kids enter the classroom daily with smiles (and a few with a daily hug, too)! I always remind my kids, "It's okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try." These kids always give me their best, so I must return by showing and giving them my best effort for them.
Our classroom's aesthetics have increased since I moved into the new-to-me classroom this year. However, I still have a ways to go to truly create a calm and comfortable setting.
Creating a calm and comfortable classroom climate is essential to maximizing student success.
Case studies have proven that the classroom environment does, indeed, increase student success. In my first four months of teaching 6th grade, a couple of items have accumulated on my classroom wish list that would make my classroom feel more complete and more like home.
First, our classroom has no windows. Not only is there no natural daylight, but the room is currently lit by fluorescent lights. These lights cause eye strain and headaches. I want to change the way my classroom is lit so that the environment is more conducive to better focus and concentration.
Secondly, I would like to purchase a classroom set of calculators, two new staplers, and a Bluetooth speaker for my kids. These miscellaneous items may be small but would be used frequently in our classroom. I play some sort of piano or relaxation music for my students on a daily basis, but I would like to have a speaker to connect to my phone so that I would be able to access and play a greater variety of music.
Lastly, the all of the classroom furniture except student desks are permanently fixed to the floor. If I sit down at my desk, I am barricaded in by my large desk and appear unapproachable from a student's perspective. Adding a stand-up desk will allow me to be more mobile in the classroom, allowing me to better serve my students.
