This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is a high poverty, Title I school in New York. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom.
They struggle personally and academically and have diverse needs. My class consists of general education students and children who receive special education services. Students living in homeless shelters travel from other parts of the city to our school every day. Families that are new to the country (English new language learners) have the added burden of learning to communicate in English.
Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are filled with energy, are happy, and are motivated to learn. They are scientists, singers, mathematicians, leaders, comedians, readers, writers, teachers, dancers, me, and you; they are everything!
My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences, creative and challenging to prepare them for the future. I want my students to feel safe from the outside world, so they can focus on learning and simply being kids.
My Project
This project includes coloring books to allow my students to forget about worries and enjoy coloring. The act of coloring has the power to replace negative feelings with positivity. Because coloring is such a joyful activity, there’s little room to entertain fear based or negative thoughts.
Kids calm down coloring almost instantly, freeing themselves with joyful thoughts and a sense of accomplishment.
Their self-esteem gets a boost.
Coloring has incredible therapeutic effects. Coloring empowers children to think creatively, to be themselves, and experience a screen-free unplugged activity. Ultimately, kids calm down coloring because while the fun demands concentration, coordination, decision-making, and mindfulness, the act itself is not at all demanding....It's just fun!
