My students are those who need a little extra help along the way. Working in a Resource room is a great privilege as I get to see my students shine in a different way from others. Every success is a big success no matter how small in our classroom. Not only do my students struggle with some sort of learning disability they are also students who attend a Title One school, meaning many families are considered to be in poverty. The classroom culture we create together is one that is a safe and loving environment and is not only for learning but for just being yourself and accepted. We learn together, play together and laugh together.
These resources are needed to create a calming corner within the classroom. As a trauma sensitive school, we put emotional and physical needs above academic needs, as we know that a student will not learn until they feel safe, calm, cared for and wanted. By creating a calm corner within the classroom, gives the students an outlet to let out frustration or regain composure before rejoining the classroom ready to learn. The reset area is one that is timed and the students are pre-taught on how to use the items safely and effectively.
Students know that when they becomes frustrated or if life outside of the school is weighing on them, they are able to come into an environment where we understand those struggles and give them an outlet in which they can express them.
The items will be used in the following ways: The shelf will be used to create a space in order for calm sensory items to sit on and separate the area from the rest of the classroom.
The sensory tools will be available to the students by choosing an item to use while cooling down. Finally the bouncy bands will be used on student chairs to give them an sensory outlet while completing work so that they will not have to leave their seats as often.
