The students in my room hold a very special place in my heart. Their families have taken the important step towards allowing them to learn through a nontraditional setting. We learn through hands-on activities and project-based learning.
I teach at a small community charter school where 80% of the students are English Language Learners and have low Social economic status.
We have one class per grade level and do our best to collaborate with both the upper and lower grades. Approximately 14% of our school population is classified as special education. We are an incredibly diverse class filled with caring hearts and excited smiles. I love my class and hope to make this year a memorable one.
Our class carpet is the focal point of our classroom. It is where we begin and end each day within first grade. It is where we gather for a story. It is where we learn to read, write, perform math tasks, and discuss our emotions.
We use our carpet every single day.
Our current carpet has been in my room for over 7 years. It has served its purpose but has definitely seen better days.
This year, I would love to bring a fresh carpet into the room. I would especially enjoy having this carpet because it has calming colors that would support my students that are overstimulated easily. It also allows each child to have a clearly distinguished individual safe space. It would allow all students to focus on our tasks and grow as learners.
