Calm Body, Calm Mind: Yoga In The Classroom

My Students

Studies have shown that incorporating yoga into the classroom has resulted in lower stress levels, better test and class performances and a better body image. Having a fun way to practice yoga would be of great benefit the students in our program.

Our students are in this special program because have behavioral issues, depression and/or are emotionally disturbed.

They are an enthusiastic and hard working group of kids. We have special PBIS incentives in place to reward students for their work and their personal wins.

My Project

Structured movement is extremely helpful for students to get the "jitters" out before starting class. I like to have students do yoga before class to gently stretch and to calm their mind so that they are ready to learn. During block periods or during club time, I would like to have students spend more time on the mat. Doing yoga will help reduce stress and anxiety they may feel during the day and provide them with a safe way to let out steam.

Having an actual yoga mat to do yoga on makes it more effective.

We will also be able to incorporate more poses if students used a mat. Another great thing about this particular mat is that it comes with games and makes coming into correct alignment easy and fun. Yoga is another tool students can use to get any frustrations out in a safe manner and calm their mind for class.
