Our school is a special place for my students! At my school, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I teach a classroom full of amazing kids that have a wealth of untapped potential. Our school is a community school, where we work hard to provide for the whole student. We provide free breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner for our students. We also provide mental health services, English classes for parents, a food pantry and so much more!
My students face significant challenges in their lives, but that never stops them from giving everything they have to learn every day!
In the words of the infamous Mrs. Frizzle, they always, "Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!" A step into our classroom is a step into fun. Each student works hard to be a "Super Kid" in our superhero-themed classroom and the school as a whole.
We make sure to integrate a fun hands-on approach to everything we do. These students have big dreams and they are not afraid to pursue them. I am currently teaching the world's future botanists, senators and engineers.
My Project
We are requesting essential tools - bean bag seats, stress balls, Rubik's cubes, timers and more - for coping with stress and trauma. Many of my students experience trauma outside of school. Some don't know where they will be sleeping at night or where their next meal will come from. This trauma impacts the way they learn and interact with friends and teachers at school.
I am creating a calm down kit and a special place in my classroom specifically for them.
This space will be dedicated to giving them the opportunity to calm their body and ready their mind for learning. It will have tools dedicated to mindfulness. We will have breathing tools, timers, soft seats and a variety of fidgets so students can recenter their body and come back into our classroom community ready to learn.
