Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Take a deep breath. Calm Down. Relax. Those are words my students here from me all the time. They are learning to manage their uncomfortable emotions. It can be difficult for students to learn but I am passionate about it being one of the most important life skills we can teach them in elementary school.
The students and staff at my school are amazing!
Our school is a Title 1 school located in McKinney, Texas. Around 72% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch which means they need economic support. They get fed here, we give them necessary supplies, and our teachers teach our hearts out.
However our students need other kinds of support as well. Our students need coping skills for handling big emotions and . That is why I am using my role as counselor to train the teachers to better understand and support these needs. I believe only when the student is emotionally and behaviorally supported can they learn academically at the highest level.
My Project
The students at my school are amazing! They arrive at school with teachers eager to teach and inspire them. However, some of our students are lacking skills to calm down when they are overcome with big emotions. When they are unable to cope and calm down we lose the opportunity to teach them academically. We must first regulate them before we can teach them reading, wrting, and math.
Many of our students come to school carrying within their hearts trauma from living in poverty and from other life experiences.
Although they come with minds ready to learn, their big emotions sometimes get in the way. My goal is to train teachers how to use the tools in the calm down bags to help students when they are in a state of reacting to their big emotions. Each teacher will receive a bag with items and skill cards. The skill cards, which I will make will have detailed instructions to explain how to use each item in the bag as a calm down tool.
Additionally, sometimes the students are too disruptive to stay in the classroom, so a centralized sensory room will be created to give students a break and time to regroup. This also gives the class an opportunity to regroup from witnessing a friend in the classroom have a difficult time.
When our students are calm, they can learn. When our students learn they can do anything! By providing these materials to our teachers and school, over five hundred students will benefit and learn skills that will empower them forever!
