My Project
I work in a New York City public school. My students are a diverse group of children. They are of different cultures and ethnicities. My students include English language learners and children with special needs. At the young age of five, they are ready to take in every bit of knowledge I can share with them. This precious time will shape their perception of what school means to them.
The students in my school live in a neighborhood of hardworking families who still struggle at the poverty level.
I work with English language learners. Many of these students are new to the country. English is not their first language. They do not have the opportunity to speak English at home, as their families communicate in languages other than English. Some children do not see their families until the evening. They go to after school programs so that their parents may spend their days working long hours to provide for the family.
My Project
I am proud to be part of a school community that teaches Social Emotional Learning. At the young age of 5, my students are learning to recognize their emotions and how to regulate them.
Connecting to their feelings and emotions fosters compassion and kindness in my Kindergarten students.
The calming toys will be soothing and regulating for my students who are experiencing anxiety. They will be placed in the "Calm Corner" for those who need them.
One component of the program my school uses includes Class Dojo. Children love to earn points for being successful in categories that I choose. For example, "using kind words", "giving a compliment", "showing responsibility". The points can be used for exciting incentives and rewards. I can't think of a better time to help young learners get in touch with their feelings.
